A guide to commonly used honorifics in 魔道祖师/The Untamed

OK - so, I’ve actually seen some confusion floating around on specific honorifics commonly used in 魔道祖师 and I figured I will put a post up to address some of this - especially the situations when they get used. Hopefully it’ll be helpful for fic writers or whoever else out there that’s getting turned around by the various translations.

As with most of Chinese vernacular, there’s a TON of similar, but different situations in which it may be permissible to use certain titles/honorifics, so bear in mind this is not an exhaustive guide. Also, I don’t have a PhD in Chinese honorifics or anything, I’m just a Chinese person that watches/reads a fair amount of historical dramas. So if I missed anything/if there was anything that was kind of unclear in the novel or drama, feel free to let me know!

公子 / gongzi/ master

Let’s start with the hardest so I can get this out of the way. You will see this translated in a variety of different ways - master, young master, sir...and they are all correct! Congratulations, you’ve hit the jackpot - depending on the situation, gongzi can be a whole hodgepodge of things.

Master: The most commonly used version in MDZS. This is a separate meaning of master from some of the honorifics discussed below - it is specifically used to address either:

Your literal master if you are a servant in the household

A somebody from a distinguished household in a polite way

General honorific: Gongzi can also be used between strangers/acquaintances as a respectful term. Gongzi is, in some ways, an indicator of respect of the other person’s status. So oftentimes you’ll find two young masters from different sects referring to each other as gongzi politely, but you wouldn’t find two beggars on the street calling each other that. and it’s usually used to address someone younger or a similar age as you. If you‘re talking to someone who is clearly your senior, use 前辈 or 先生.

Because it has the connotation of youth and aristocracy associated with it, oftentimes innkeepers/sellers may use gongzi to address male customers  (particularly youthful men) because it’s a bit more flattering. Kind of like how the modern day shopkeeper calls you ‘美女’ (beauty) or even ‘亲爱的’（my dear - IDK when this started becoming a thing but if you do any online shopping on Taobao you know what I’m talking about) in China. They don’t actually think you’re beautiful/feel affection for you, it’s just a way of addressing the customer to make you feel good about yourself HA. It’s nice to be called gongzi even if you’re not actually a noble.

There’s variants of this - 小公子/ xiaogongzi is typically young master, although I think some translations just directly use the young master for gongzi. It can also mean the younger master if there is an older sibling in question here (e.g. Wen Chao was referred to as 温小公子 as he was the younger son), although you can also use 二公子 （second master), as many do when referring to Lan Wangji. It sounds a little less juvenile.

This term is used for guys - I would say the female equivalent could be 千金/ qianjin or 小姐 /xiaojie.

宗主 / zongzhu/ sect leader

This can only refer to the sect leader - it is a title, and it is passed down. There is typically only one sect leader at any one time, and his eldest male heir will be the successive leader of the sect. I’m going to take this chance to clear up some misconceptions:

Unless Lan Xichen bears no male heirs before his death, Lan Wangji will not succeed him. Lan Sizhui, given that he is not a Lan by birth, will likely never be the Lan sect leader. Yes yes, we all know he’s the adoptive son, but adoptive means literally nothing in the progenical world of Chinese history. Plus, he’s not even the adoptive son of Lan Xichen, so he is a long, long way down from ever being sect leader unless he forms his own, which he would likely never because that’s kind of like betraying your family.

On that same topic, Nie Huaisang succeeded Nie Mingjue because Nie Mingjue died without an heir and Nie Huaisang was the closest blood relative.

For the Jin sect, the succession would have been Jin Guangshan -> Jin Zixuan -> Jin Ling. (y’all I wrote here that it was Jin Zixun first in line but I totally blanked that he was actually a cousin and NOT the son of JGS so ignore that LOL) Since Jin Zixuan died, it became Jin Guangyao - Jin Ling is next in line as he is of the next generation and too young at that time to rule. Honestly, if Jin Ling was older at the time of Jin Zixuan’s death and if this was a Chinese historical palace drama, there would probably be some serious internal political intrigue going on as Jin Guangyao’s claim over the seat would arguably be weaker than Jin Ling’s since he is illegitimate.

For the Jiang sect, Jiang Cheng is the heir even though Jiang Yanli is older because he is male. The question of who will inherit his seat (a very valid question given his luck with dating, although I am sure someone somewhere will eventually warm the prickly cockles of his heart) remains open. IMO there is a less than zero chance that Jin Ling succeeds him unless Jiang Cheng specifically demands for it, but he likely wouldn’t because he is all about decorum and also it would put Jin Ling in an incredibly difficult situation, which is the last thing he would want for his nephew. If he doesn’t end up producing heirs, the seat will likely go to whomever he names as successor, even if non-blood related - maybe the current head disciple.

With that said, although there were generally established rules for succession, actual Chinese history (like all of history) often played out very differently (e.g. Emperor Kangxi stripped crown prince Yinreng of his right to succeed and appointed Yinzhen (Yongzheng), who was the fourth surviving prince, as his successor) so really, even if you were to base sect succession off imperial succession traditions, you could still make the argument that anything goes as long as you have the right people in your corner. HA.

老祖/ laozu/ grandmaster/forefather

I mean, I think grandmaster is probably a fair translation of laozu, which, to be honest, is a harder honorific to translate. It’s definitely influenced by Taoism and not very common at all, but it’s likely derived from Hongjun Laozu (鸿钧老祖), who was a deity and teacher. It does NOT only stand for a senior teacher/master however, because 祖 itself has ancestral connotations, so I think I would personally translate this as forefather. IMO, it’s really only fair to use this on Wei Wuxian and/or originators of a certain branch of study in the MDZS universe - I would consider laozu as the term of respect afforded to people who were pioneers in their fields/sects.

In that sense, Lan Qiren is NOT the grandmaster of the Lan sect. He is an elder - a very respected elder that was basically interim sect leader, but in terms of official title, technically, Lan Xichen could pull rank on him, but he likely wouldn’t unless pressed to because he is also Lan Xichen’s elder.

前辈 / qianbei/ senior/elder

This is kind of an in-between term to politely refer to someone who is your senior, but with whom you really have no formal affiliation with. Unlike 先生, it’s also unisex. A related term is 长辈 /zhangbei, but that is used for people whom you have familial/closer ties with - like an uncle, or someone within your own sect.

师父/师尊/ shifu/shizun / master

Your teacher/master, but not in the servant-master context. Someone who mentors you for years - in the xianxia/wuxia culture, this is a pretty special term because most disciples will only ever belong to one sect and will only ever have one master, and everyone else is a qianbei. The disciple has to ‘拜师’ (to formally request this relationship) and the master also has to ‘收徒’ (to formally accept disciples). So a lot of people went to Yiling in an attempt to 拜师, but Wei Wuxian never did 收徒.

In the wuxia/xianxia context, shifu is technically unisex even though 父 in itself is a male-centric term, although female masters might be more commonly referred to by the gender-neutral shizun instead.

Now that I think about it, shifu doesn’t actually appear in MDZS. Lan Wangji calls Lan Qiren 叔父 /shufu, which is completely different. It means uncle (father’s younger brother, to be exact lol), since that is their relationship.

老头/ laotou/ old man

Wei Wuxian uses this to address Lan Qiren behind his back. It literally just means old man, haha. It’s informal but not a term you would use to refer to someone who is close to you/whom you like, but not exactly a term that is insulting or derogatory, although in Lan Qiren’s case, it is irreverent because it is ill-fitting for the relationship that Wei Wuxian and Lan Qiren have. Meant to be used on men, usually for women it would be 老婆婆/ laopopo (NOT THE SAME as 老婆/ laopo, which means wife. Welcome to the weird wonderful world of the Chinese language!)

师弟/哥/兄/姐/妹/ shi di/ge/xiong/jie/mei/ younger brother/ older brother/ another variant of older brother/ older sister/ younger sister

NOT TO BE USED FOR YOUR ACTUAL FAMILY. This is in the context of the sect only. Your fellow disciples, but with varying levels of seniority. Familial honorifics are a whole different thing.

In the context of the sect, who you call your shidi/ge etc. is usually NOT based on age - it is based on someone’s seniority within the sect. If you have been in the sect/under your master’s tutelage for longer, you are the senior, even if you are younger in age.

With that, I think the novel states that both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are similar in age, so it is actually incredibly hard to determine if the author deliberately went against this convention and Wei Wuxian calls Jiang Cheng shidi because he is genuinely younger than Wei Wuxian, or if it is simply because Wei Wuxian is the head disciple of the sect (and therefore, technically, everyone is his shidi). I actually think it might be the former because he refers to Jiang Yanli as shijie, although now that I think about it, it might be the latter...as a reflection of the level of admiration Wei Wuxian has for Jiang Yanli WOAH.

(Fun fact: there’s a scene in the novel in Yi city where Wei Wuxian was silently weirded out that Xiao Xingchen referred to him as ‘qianbei’ - because Xiao Xingchen is his mother’s shidi, which makes him Wei Wuxian’s senior, but then he quickly realizes it’s because he’s talking to Xue Yang and not Xiao Xingchen.)

先生 /xiansheng/ mister/sir/teacher

In present day, this is literally the most vanilla term you can use to politely address a guy. Can be a stranger, or an acquaintance you want to politely address. Usually older than you, although if you’re both similar in age and you’re not really familiar with each other, you might still use it just to err on the side of caution. In xianxia/ancient China, this is usually used more like ‘teacher/sir’ to address an elder. It’s more scholastic in its implication and less generic than qianbei.

In the Lan sect, by crowd definition, 先生 refers to Lan Qiren unless otherwise stated, which makes sense and shows the amount of respect he is afforded in the sect.

夫人 / furen/ wife/madam

A term of respect for typically older women, or can also be used to refer to one’s wife.

Lastly, let me just add that this is just something that’s meant to be helpful for people as they work through the series - at the end of the day, it’s all fictional/xianxia itself as a genre is fantasy so if you need to subvert any one of the generally held succession traditions or whatnot in order to make your fic work, go!!! Do it!!!

The connection breaks as Xuejiao finishes the call, "I gotta go now, I’m trying to get in my astrology professor’s pants after class!" The line goes silent and you huff, opening up GPS to lead you down the forsaken 96th Street. Distracted with directions, some guy crashes into you with his bike.

"What the hell!? Watch where you're going!" You yell picking up your fallen bag- which scattered all of my weeaboo s.hit.

"Maybe if you didn't stand in the middle of the street, you wouldn't have wrecked my bike! You're lucky you didn't get killed by a real car!" You looked up at the ignorant voice and found a young, orange-haired Asian boy. Maybe Chinese, like me?

"I wrecked your bike!? You're really unbelievable.." You placed everything back into the bag and took out your wallet. "Look, I don't have time for this. I'm sorry for damaging your tricycle, or whatever- here." You threw a fully punched Xing Fu Tang loyalty card at the kid’s dumbfounded face and walked off.

It's 9:57 AM, your o-chem class starts at 10 and you still can't find the campus. Why did my parents even make me leave Hong Kong? Because of the government, the pollution? Both countries are f.ucked. I choke there and I choke here.

Finally, I'm here.

You ran to the STEM building and up the stairs to land in a spacious lab room. You hurried to an empty seat near the top row. 9:59 AM.. Thank goodness.

In the midst of the lesson, the door opened to reveal the same clumsy jerk you had encountered a few minutes ago. He rushed to an empty seat, you going unnoticed by him.

Your first 50 minutes of college went by pretty quick. Nothing more than a syllabus review and a small question/answer session.

"I know it is the first day, but you are all in big kid school now, so I am assigning a semester project you will work on for all of this first term with a partner." Each array of your peers groaned at this announcement.

"You will use your knowledge from high school chemistry or an equivalent to complete it." The professor continued, "I will choose your partners and you are both expected to be responsible with it all semester."

"Remember your partner's name so that when I'm done, you can come down to get each other's contact information."

The professor continued to call out names as you were caught up in texting Xuejiao about the kid who crashed into you earlier this morning being in your class, only half listening until you heard your name being called.

“Y/N and Yangyang.." Did I miss a racist joke or something? What the hell is a Yang Yang?

You kept texting Xuejiao, deciding to deal with it after class.

"I know it's a lot to take in on the first day, but on the bright side, you don't have to do the project," Some idiots celebrated, "but know that I will judge you harshly on it and I will be teaching at an Ivy League while you get kicked out of an Ivy League, never achieving your dreams." He fakes a sad face and the same idiots fuss.

"Now come meet your partners and have a good rest of your first day!" Your first professor dismissed the first class.

You put your phone in your pocket and stumbled to the bottom of the classroom, calling out for "Yangyang," the name feeling awkward as it rolled off your tongue.

"That's me." You spun around and were met with the trike guy from earlier.

"IT'S YOU!" You exclaimed in unison with him, the space between you two silencing for a second, before you spoke again.

"Oh my God I can't believe I got such a d!ck as a partner." You rolled your eyes with crossed arms.

"Hey! It takes two to d!ck!" Yangyang argues back. You stared at the fellow Asian boy in disgust and dismay.

"What the f.uck!?"

Both of you suddenly broke down laughing, your huddled classmates peeking at you with judgemental stares.

Yangyang calmed down and talked more comfortably with you, "Thanks for the boba by the way. I drank it deliciously.. before I dropped it because I crashed again."

Shaking your head at the ironic situation, you walked to the next class with a little over 10 minutes to spare, so you stopped for coffee at the Starbucks on campus.

The shop was pretty small and there weren't a lot of people inside. As you were about to enter, another Asian boy held the door open. "Thank you." You smiled, bowing your head in gratitude.

"Anything for a girl with such a charming smile. Can I buy you a coffee?" He asked.

"No, that's ok!" You replied, not wanting to inconvenience this guy- and besides, he might just be trying to get in my pants.

"Please I insist! Get anything you want!" You decided to take his offer because in the end, it’s free coffee. He was also pretty charming himself, and seemingly harmless.

"Could I get an iced Americano, please?" You ordered. "I'll have the same." The boy told the barista.

You both stood to the side of the bar, talking while the identical drinks were being made. "Thank you for paying, you really didn't have to." "No no it's really fine. I wanted to.. I'm Dejun Xiao by the way, I think I'm in your chemistry class. What's your name?"

"I'm Y/N." "Oh are you Chinese!?" You nodded. "I'm Chinese as well. Are you from China?" "I'm from Hong Kong." "That's so cool! I'm from Guangdong." "Oh nice, nice.." The drinks were handed to you and you walked out together, strolling into the center of the campus.

"What class do you have next?" Dejun asked, sipping at his coffee. You took out a crumpled paper to examine the schedule printed on it. "I have biochem next." "Oh we have the same class!" Dejun announced. "That's crazy! Are you premed?" You asked him. "No, I'm studying forensic science. I want to be a homicide detective.”

Wow this guy is impressive. "Wow, that's awesome.. I want to be a heart surgeon.”

“That’s so cool!” "Thank you." You laughed at his energy. The two of you walked in the direction of your next shared class, conversing and giggling with each other along the way.

You reached your next classroom and found empty seats next to one another. “You can call me Xiaojun, by the way. I think it’s cooler than Dejun.”

“If you have to say your name is cool, then it’s not cool.” Another Asian man walked up to your row.

"Hey man! You're in here, too?" Xiaojun asked. "Yeah! It was a lucky draw." Xiaojun then motioned over to you, "This is Y/N. She's my new.. friend?" He smiled at you, looking for confirmation. Returning his smile, "Yes I am. Nice to meet you." The other male shook your hand and introduced himself. "Nice to meet you, too. I'm Kun."

"She's from China, like us!" Kun was surprised. "Really? Why did you come to America?" "My parents made me." You shrugged. "Wow mine did, too." Kun chuckled and sat down in the row of you and Xiaojun.

I left China, but China came to me. Maybe this year is destined to be good..

Here I go again.......

I've had it with you fucking STRAIGHT crapmila shippers coming at me in my asks. You are NOT changing my mind. All you are doing is pissing me off. Those who follow me, know what happens, when I get pissed, so here we go.

I actually started writing this post, because of a funny moment in an interview. Then I watched another interview, and it got even funnier. I'll warn you now, this post is going to run the gamut, but don't worry, I'll finish it on a happy note.

I haven't really been keeping up with all of Camila's interviews lately, because like many of you, I'm tired of having to hear her promote all the bullshit, instead of HER music. It's ridiculous. I decided to give in and read a few and watch a few. It was worth it.

I watched the Capital FM, or whatever the fuck it's called, and it was a priceless moment. She went from happy to be there, to ready to throw herself off a fucking bridge in a matter of seconds.

Camila's whole demeanor changed, when they asked her about her "relationship" with Mawn Shendes. She gave her orchestrated response about how she "loves" him, and then the camera cut to the interviewer real quick. It's when the camera done another quick pan back to Camila, that the truth of all this shit, was really written all over her face. My mind went straight to her choking on her own lies, in the Liar music video.  She can't even hide the truth. She is tired of all this shit.

Then I listened to the 15 minute Zane Lowe phone-in.  That one had me rolling. Camila being Camila. If she can't tell us her whole truth, she tries to tell us little truths, as she tries to remember all the fake shit she's supposed to say.

Then, I read The Sun puff piece. Yeah, that was them dropping an elephant on her ass, for not being able to hide her disgust, and fumbling on some of her answers.

I tell ya, they are constantly trying to fix a mess, this era. Instead of concocting narratives and lies, why don't you just promote your Artist and HER damn music. For fucks sake, STOP promoting  Shendes and this fake ass "relationship". Camila is about to lose her shit, over all this crap.

You know this shit is fake, when it's obvious she is sick and tired of talking about his ass. They started this shit show, with answers of wanting to keep it private and not talk publicly about it. That's the REAL Camila. Now, she is asked about it every fucking interview, and she is now having to actually answer it. She hates it, yet she HAS to. If she wasn't being contractually forced to answer this shit, she would simply do what she has always done, and not answer the damn questions.

Instead, she has a prepared stock answer ready for each interview. That's yet another way we can tell this shit is fake as fuck. One "I'm happy. I love him" is an aw moment. Two is a side eye moment. Three, is part of a fucking narrative.

He, after refusing to talk about their "relationship" before, is now finding a way to mention her name in every fucking meet & greet. He does this, even if he hasn't been asked about her, or their "relationship", at all. It's beyond absurd, at this point.

Let's get back to the Zane Lowe interview. If you haven't listened to it, you should. He asked her something along the lines of, how she handled her "break up" with the dickhead. Oh boy, did she stumble all over that one.

She did remember to say, she was devastated and upset about it. (Yay memory!) Then went on to say, it didn't really matter which one does the breaking up, it's still devastating either way, and lets you know just how much you really loved them. She then went on to say, she hasn't ever experienced the bad side of a break-up. She hasn't ever been the one broken up with.

That in itself tells us, she is the one who "dumped" the dickheads ass. (good riddance) The problem here is, you don't just dump someone you really love....especially if they really love you back. If two people really love each other, and they "make you the happiest you've ever been", there is no fucking reason to dump their ass......Unless someone else comes along, and offers you a better deal!!! Well, in this case, "a better deal" would be the equivalent of "fighting for the one you truly love"

Listen, if this fucking narrative happened, the way they want us to believe it did, then no one would have really loved anyone. If Camila really loved the dickhead, she wouldn't have dumped his ass, for Shendes. If Shendes really loved Camila, he wouldn't have even attempted to "steal" her away from someone who made her the "happiest she's ever been." That's the fucking tea!

That's why none of this shit makes any damn sense...at least not to most of us. If we were to believe this narrative, we would have to numb our brains enough to believe, Camila went from happier than she's ever been with one dickhead, to PUBLICLY sucking face with another dickhead, a few weeks later.

That's why all these damn dumbasses out there, are calling Camila a damn cheating slut. Because, if you believe this fucked up narrative, you would have to believe she is just a dick hopping fluzzy, that confuses like for love, and is a simple selfish bitch.

Some of you do believe that. Those of you who do, actually believe Shendes is a fucking saint. In reality, if you believe this fucking narrative, that means SHAWN MENDES IS A SELFISH NARCISSISTIC DICK, who "fought" for someone who was in a fucking relationship with someone else. That doesn't make him a nice guy. That would make him a fucking prick who thinks he's better than everyone else. That's the fucking tea!!

You fucking crapmila shippers like to say Camren shippers are "delusional" and "pathetic", for shipping such a "toxic" couple. You homophobic jackasses obviously don't know what toxic is, because crapmila would have Camren beat all to shit on the toxicity meter, IF YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS BULLSHIT NARRATIVE!

*breath*...Back to the Zane Lowe interview. After she said she had never experienced the getting dumped side of a relationship, she then went on to say, and I quote, "I've never been in a real relation..." Oh shit! Oops gotta fix it. after a pause..."I've only been in two relationships."

That's your real tea, Ladies and gents. That's her little truth to keep her from choking on all the lies. That she has never been in a real relationship..." If she had not had an elephant dropped on her head, and been allowed to finish that statement, she would have said, she's never been in a real relationship...with a boy/man. (She's gay, IN MY OPINION)

You know there was someone in the room, waving their hands in the air like a mad man, ready to fly drones at her head. But, that's OK, @rogergold and @shoshonnastone put together a puff piece for The Sun, to fix the narrative.

Hmm! I wonder which two "relationships" she was being forced to remember? Was it Austin and Ew? Well, it couldn't have been Austin. That FAKE narrative was destroyed a long damn time ago. First by Austin himself, then by Camila.

For shits and giggles, Camila decided to put another nail in that shit PR. How? The official narrative was that Austin DUMPED HER after she went public with their "relationship". But, she just said, she hadn't experienced getting dumped before. Oops again!

It wasn't the boy-bander. He was nothing more than propaganda for more bullshit. It wasn't early Shendes, because every time he tried to "kiss" her, she turned him down...because he kept calling her "kid". (Corden interview 2015)

The only two it could be, is the dickhead, because he was her "first real relationship", and Mawn Shendes now. Oh, I almost forgot, Mawn has publicly stated, that he can't wait to get his heart broken, so he can write his first really good album. No problem! Camila's all set to help you with that, too.

She already saved your fucking career by giving you Ceñorita, doing another duet with you, that gave you your first number 1 hit, agreeing to do a damn PR relationship with you, taking your crappy selling third album and making it Platinum, and followed your ass around on your tour, to put more asses in the seats.

She did all that for you SHAWN MENDES. All she had to do, was fuck up her own image to do it. That's a REAL FRIEND for you. How are you going to return the favor Shawn? Love Me Anyway - Tyler Seguin - Part 1

Notes: Ok so here it is, literally the first thing I ever wrote for someone else to read. This is where it all started. I never finished the series but I think there are about 7 or 8 parts of that are done. I’ll publish some of it, and you guys can let me know if you want more of it. Peace, Love and Hugs all!

Work had been a hell of a week. So when your friends suggested going out and letting off some steam Friday night you were all in. You got home from work and debated on what to wear. You were in the mood for cute and sexy. It’d been 6 months since you and Kyle; otherwise known as he who shall remain nameless, broke up. You’d gone out on a couple of dates but nothing came of it. Browsing through your closet looking for something that said I’m available; you settled on a pair of cute dressy black shorts with an off the shoulder lacy black top. Nothing that said slut, but the outfit did say you were looking. Hearing your phone ding, immediately knowing your friends were here to pick you up. You finished putting on your sandals, grabbed your bag and headed out the door.

 The four of you headed to a little restaurant for dinner and some pre-party drinks. As always, being with your girls just made you feel so much better. After dinner you decided to hit the club. You and your friend Jenna had a few too many pineapple martinis at the restaurant, so that first drink at the club you really felt. You knew you needed to slow down. So you went to the bar to grab a water. The bartender was cute, and here you were asking for water...ugh. So you quickly changed your train of thought and ordered a tequila sunrise to go with that water. Mr. Hot Bartender grabbed the water fairly quick; so you took a few quick sips as he went mix your other drink. Solely focusing on Mr. Hottender; as you were now calling him; you weren’t ready when some bumped into you spilling your water on you and the bar. 

 “Damn It” you whisper yelled as Mr. ‘I’ve drank too much and am stumbling into people’ looks over at you. “I’m so sorry” he said. “Let me buy you a new drink?” You turned to tell him that it wasn’t necessary, when you realize...it's Tyler freakin Seguin. What are the chances? Ok so yes you’re a hockey fan that’s number one. Two you can appreciate that Tyler is hot in every way; and three he’s also the equivalent of a male whore. And lord knows you don’t want to be another notch on his bedpost. He probably has so many notches he’s had to get a new bedposts, twice. You look at him finally saying “It’s not necessary”; turning your head dabbing the water off of you and the bar. 

 “No really, I’m super sorry, let me make it up to” Tyler implored. 

 “Look its only water, so no harm done” you casually replied. 

 Just then Mr. Hottender returned with your mixed drink. You went to hand him a 20. Shaking his head, he rejected the money, “looks like this one’s on him.” Nodding over to Tyler who was standing next to you. 

 You smiled over at Tyler and said “It really wasn’t necessary, but thank you.”

 “You’re welcome, so do you come here often?”

 “You’re really gonna use that lame pick up line” you fired back.

 Tyler looked sheepishly down at the floor and then back up at you. “What I meant to say was...I haven’t really seen you around here before. I would’ve noticed someone as beautiful as you.”

 You looked him straight in the eye, and you both bursted out laughing.

 “Sorry that really wasn’t much better was it” he laughed.

 “No not really” you chuckled in return. “But to answer your question, I’ve been here a few times, not many. I’m out with some friends. Speaking of which, they’re probably wondering where I went off to. Thanks again for the drink.” With that you turned, heading off, back to your friends.

 “Wait” Tyler grabbed your wrist, spilling your water some more; but you didn’t even notice that. There was something about when he touched you, a spark and not the static electricity kind. Your eyes moved to where his hand touched your wrist. It was like there was this magnetism in his touch that drew you in; skin feeling hot and cold at the same time. You wanted him to let go but then never let go; you couldn’t explain it. It seemed like forever but then you finally heard him say, “What’s your name?”

 As you looked up. He let go of your arm and the spell was broken. “(Y/N), and that’s all you get. You’ve got to work for the rest.” With that you moved with lightning speed back to where your friends were at.

TYLER’S POV

 You were glad to be back in Dallas. More importantly you were elated that you were back to playing hockey. Summer break was always fun but hockey was your passion. You had a little over a week before training camp, so you were going to live it up just a little bit longer before the season started. Which is how you ended up at the club and saw her walking in. She had the most beautiful smile you’d ever seen. She was with a group of friends and they were all laughing at something one of them had said. You couldn’t take your eyes off her. She wasn’t your typical girl. She definitely carried herself differently. Planning on what move to make on her, your train of thought was interrupted by your friend Mike.

 “Earth to Seggy, did you not hear a word I said man?”

 “Huh? What? No sorry” you replied. 

 “I said that blonde over there is giving you the ‘fuck me’ eyes. Are you gonna go make a move or what?”

 “What blonde? There are like a million here. Besides I’ve got more important things on my mind.”

 Mike looked at you quizzically. “More important than getting laid!”

 You finally looked at him and said “yeah didn’t you see that girl come in.” When he shook his head you continued, “the one over…..” Shit where did she go. You just saw her a second ago. You scanned the club looking for her and didn’t see her. 

 “Are you sure it’s not that blonde right there. I mean she looks like she’s totally down for anything.”

 “I could care less about her. Go shoot your shot if you want. I’m more interested in finding that girl with the million dollar smile.” 

 Mike shrugged at you and moved over to the blonde he was talking about. You continued to search the club when your eyes finally landed on her. There she was smiling again, sipping on some cocktail every now and then, which made you wish you were the straw. She seemed to be with just a group of girls but you could see guys swirling all around them. She whispered something to one of her friends and was headed off to what looked like the bar. This was your chance.

 You made your way up to the bar, dismissing some girl trying to get your attention. You planned on just buying her a drink when some guy bumped you; causing you to stumble into her spilling her drink. Shit, you thought not a way to make a great first impression. You apologized and offered to buy her a drink to make up for it. When she finally looked at you; it was like there was a moment of recognition in her face. Great, she knows who I am this is going to be easy;and then she turned and dismissed you. 

 What the hell just happened you thought to yourself? You tried to apologize again, when she told you it was just water. You saw Nick the bartender coming back with another drink for her so you nodded your head to him; signaling for him to just put it on your tab.

 She finally really acknowledged you, thanking you for the drink. You saw your chance.

 “You’re welcome, do you come here often?” Seriously what just came out of my mouth? Ugh this is going horribly. 

 She totally called you out on it. “You’re really gonna use that lame pick up line?”

 You could feel the heat rising to your cheeks so you looked down at the floor to get your shit together and started again. “What I meant to say was...I haven’t really seen you around here before. I would’ve noticed someone as beautiful as you.”

 Oh my god!!! That’s not what you meant to say at all! I have way more game than this. You looked at her, saw her start to laugh; and just busted out laughing right with her. God her laugh was even beautiful. It was like a melody you kept wanting to replaying over and over in your mind. 

 You apologized yet again. You were doing that a lot around her; but she was at least smiling at you now, and then she started answering your lame ass question. As soon as she finished though she turned to leave. You did the first thing that came to your mind and reached out to touch her, to stop her from going. “Wait,” you said.

 The minute you touched her you knew there was something between the two of you. She just felt right, like she was made for you. You had been drawn to her the minute she walked in, but this, this was different. You wanted to draw her closer to your body and never let go. You looked into her eyes and could tell she was feeling something too. You let go and asked the one thing you needed to know right now. “What’s your name?”

 She visibly shook herself and answered, “(Y/N), and that’s all you get. You’ve got to work for the rest.” With that she was off again and you were left standing there knowing that you’d work your ass off for any little piece of information she’d give you.

No, I don't mind talking about this...! I recognize however that it is a sensitive subject so I am going to activate my Insurance Policy and put it under a cut so, disclaimer this is all just My Personal Opinion and subject to taste and you can like what you like etc etc.

Warning: Trans Les Mis Opinions Under The Cut

So there are ... several different things that made me reluctant to try to engage with this element. Maybe things have changed since I last did so! Maybe they haven’t! But in any case these were Super common tropes and themes that I used to see around all the time and which bothered me personally (you can call it squick if you want), and actually made up a majority of the trans les mis content so I just disengaged entirely.

1. Trans [Enjolras] Pregnancy. This is perhaps the biggest one. Trans [male] pregnancy is kind of a sensitive topic at the best of times. In my Personal Opinion, the idea of Enjolras getting pregnant is so wildly incongruent with who he actually is as a character and the values that he has, and is a major squick for me. But this used to be so common that if I saw trans Enjolras mention, 90% of the time it was followed up with something about pregnancy.

It basically gave me the impression people were making Enjolras trans solely and exclusively so they would have the “excuse” to write mpreg & thereby reducing trans people to their body parts but also... body parts that are even more upsetting to be reduced to if you’re trans, lol. This happened with other characters too but 90% of the time it was Enjolras. If you want to write mpreg please [seriously please] don’t feel like you have to make one of them trans for it to “make sense”.

2. Feminization Of Enjolras. Enjolras looks quite feminine physically! I don’t actually mind if people lean heavily into that, in fact I quite like it when it’s done in the sort of Romantic Androgyny Makes You Beautiful fashion. This one was [almost] exclusively seen in modern AU content, which I try to avoid anyway because it’s just not really my thing 99% of the time, but it did actually make up a significant portion of Enjolras Content and a large Percentage of Trans Enjolras content.

What I mean by this is: a) depicting Enjolras wearing short skirts, crop tops, and/or lipstick because Fuck Gender Roles. Trans people are not obligated to Fuck Gender Roles & once again this feels to me personally incongruent with Enjolras’s characterization ... It’s fine if you are a trans guy and want to wear these things. But the conspicuous Lack of characters headcanon-ed as cis men who were wearing these things bc Fuck Gender Roles was... well, conspicious. Presenting trans characters as if they Have To completely ignore “gender roles” & “trans men can be feminine too [in fact they should be] [but cis men can’t]” actually wraps all the way around from Fuck Gender to... just feeling extremely uncomfortably binary gender essentialism.

       b) depicting Enjolras as extremely weak, not knowing how to fight, etc. This one actually feels both transphobic And misogynistic ... the fact that he looks “like a 17 year old girl” doesn’t appear to make him weak or incompetent in battle in Victor Hugo’s original novel, so ... :/ Again, just uncomfortable.

3. Non-binary Jean Prouvaire. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this. It’s fine. But the fact that it became such Widely accepted fanon to the point where people have actually “corrected” me when I used he/him pronouns to refer to Prouvaire is A Lot. Why this character specifically? Again I can’t help but feel like it’s because of a belief that cis men cannot be “soft” or like poetry or flowers or whatever. (Never mind the debate about whether or not Prouvaire is in fact Soft; he is almost invariably depicted that way in this case).

The other element to this is flattening and reducing gender and gender expression (especially in the case of non-binary people) solely to the use of pronouns. However instead of actually engaging w/ things I personally find interesting, most of the Prouvaire Trans Content appeared to be centered around the use of non-binary pronouns (they/them) (to the point where I have been “corrected” on it in the past), despite the fact that this makes no actual sense given that he is actually French and they/them pronouns are not a thing in French (at least not France French) (yes there are some people experimenting w/ gender neutrality in French language but there are more people in France who are in fact non-binary but for whom that does not center around pronouns; the specific they/them pronoun focus feels extremely anglophone).

Again like, this is ok, I understand that some non-binary people for whom this IS important (and that’s fine!) project onto Prouvaire and like, that is part of fandom, a lot of it is inherently personal. But also it is in my opinion an extremely uninteresting way of depicting gender-- along with the comparison of Jehan vs. Jean as being the same as a trans person’s chosen name... like that’s not what it is. It is, as a dear friend once said, more equivalent to that guy in your foreign language class who insists on being referred to by their foreign language name even outside of class; or your renfest nerd friend called Gavin who insists on going by Gawain.

These are the three Main things. As I’m sure you can tell by this rant, a lot of this is obviously personal taste. It’s fine if people like these things. But I don’t and some of it makes me profoundly uncomfortable, and the fact that it made/makes(?) up the majority of trans les mis content just turned me off of engaging with it totally. I am sure there is good trans les mis content out there, I have even read some of it in the past, but I am not interested in wading through a bunch of things that make me uncomfortable in order to find it haha. Hope this satisfies! I am in fact willing to talk about these things so don’t worry about pressuring me by asking or w/e.

A/N: I saw this dog that looked like a bear, kind of scary but also superrr cuddly looking and I thought of this macho mochi. Hope you like it there are more parts to come.Sorry for any mistakes made.

  Winter is one of those seasons where you just don’t want to go anywhere. Just staying home with a nice warm cup of tea, coffee or coco and enjoy a good book or movie. But we all have those moments where we have to adult and today it was your turn. The day had almost finished when you opened the fridge and realized.

“Who ate all the damn food?” a slap echoed when your palm hit the skin on your forehead “That is rightttt, Mina was here yesterday.”your hands found your waistline and rested there “I need to stop inviting friends over all the time.”

 Taking a deep sigh, you walked over to your bedroom. You were groaning and stepping harshly as you were throwing clothes onto your bed. 

“Ughhhh, too cold!” 

 Swinging over the long and fluffy scarf, you made sure you were nice and warm before even confronting the cold weather. The moment the building’s main entrance opened up ,you were hit with a gust of cold wind. You could hear the howling sound it was making. Crackle after crackle you were getting farther from your home. 

 As the name says already, the convenient store wasn’t far, but in this weather it felt like a hike on mount Everest. The second the warm air hit your face you felt hope and so did your stomach. When people say don’t go shopping when you are hungry, they were right. Who knows what stuff you had in the bags on your way out, what was sure though was the fact that you grabbed anything and everything ,that looked good enough to eat with the packaging still on it.

 As you were about to exit the store, you pulled out a sandwich out of the bag and took a big bite from it.

“ Oh yeah.” you said muffled by the food “ That hits the spot nicely.” 

  The wind outside had gotten stronger, so powerful that it was picking up snow from the ground and basically throwing it in your face. Taking a few deep breaths, you placed the sandwich in the bag and stepped out.

“ Wow wow”  the wind was pushing you back a bit. Still being able to walk some what normally, you felt like you were taking two steps and then one back. Getting home was gonna happen sooner or later, but the night was beginning to fall and temperatures weren’t going to be so nice to you anymore.

 Like the champ you were, with all the power left in you, you were about to reach your house ,when the wind knocked some snow in your eyes.

“Fuck!” it was blowing very strongly and you had to kneel down to keep yourself from falling. The sound turned from a howl ,to the voice of a ghost that was hunting you.One minute had passed and then two, you weren’t moving at all and that was a no go. A plan was needed to get out of this situation as fast as possible.

“ Oh God, what is up with this day? A person can’t get themselves anything.” you were thinking about possibly crawling home, but your self-respect was not going to allow you that at all.That didn’t stop you from considering it though.

“ I bet people won’t even notice, plus my face is covered so no one will know.” the wind was turning slowly but surely into a blizzard  “ Hu?” you stopped mid way thinking. You could still hear what was happening around you, but the biting cold wasn’t hitting your face anymore.

 Slowly you rose your head up and noticed something gigantic in front of you. It had a deep brown color with a slight tint of amber. Hesitantly you reached out.

“ What?!” your hand almost disappeared into the object that was blocking the cold.Moving your head to the side you were met with two big, dark eyes and a puff of warm air. It took some time, but judging by the silhouette it was a dog, probably a bear looking at it’s size. The pup nudged you with its tail and you stood up. Yes, the wind was as strong, if not stronger than before, but you didn’t feel the same resistance. The body of the animal was blocking maybe 50% of the blizzard.

  It took you less than 5min to get back to your building. You patted the dog on the head and smiled.

“ Thank you sooo much little guy...oh- I mean you don’t look little at all. A!” reaching in your bag you pulled out the half eaten sandwich and gave it to it ”Sorry I can’t offer you more. “ 

  You were looking at it and noticed how wet its fur had gotten. The poor thing was probably hiding somewhere sheltered from the storm and all. You were about to unlock the door, when you turned around and saw the pup still looking at you. You closed your eyes for a sec and went back to it, putting your scarf around its neck “ Should keep you warm.” you patted its head and the dog seemed to like it “ Go find some good place to dry off.” with one last smile you went inside, in the elevator and got home safely. 

 Throwing all the bags on the kitchen table ,you dropped on the couch and took a deep breath. The fire place your parents insisted on you getting had finally proven to you its worth. The air was warm and enjoyable. Closing your eyes, you relaxed,but your mind drifted to your savior.

“ Poor thing...” you whispered to yourself

  The room was quiet and your head was thinking of all kinds of possible bad outcomes for the pup. You were worried it might freeze to death somewhere, or not be able to find a safe spot.

“ Ughhhhh.” you jumped up and grabbed the nearest coat you could find “ Fuck me, why am I doing this.” cussing with every move you made, you opened the door and ran out. Wearing almost nothing to protect you from the cold, you looked out the glass doors of the building. “ I can’t believe I am doing this right now.” you threw yourself in the blizzard willingly.

 The cold was stabbing at your cheeks, eyes watering and nose about to resign its duties as a functioning body part.Your hair was all over the place. Your arm was covering the top of your head as you were fighting your way through the winter. 

 You were wandering for what seemed an hour, but you couldn’t see the dog anywhere. You were sweaty even if it sounded impossible and very tired. Sadly giving up was the only option at this point. Dragging in the snow, your feed were trembling. It was unbelievable how you survived this long so lightly dressed. 

  The moment you were about to unlock the door, your vision went blank and you lost grip on the keys. The jingling sound let you follow them to the snow at the bottom of the stairs. But the state of your legs dropped you to the stone ground. You were puffing and wiping your face. Leaning your head onto the cold wall ,you tried to gather your strength and get up. As you were starting to see clearly again ,you felt something brush against you. 

 Lifting your arm you grabbed the material that fell on your chest and relisted it was your scarf.

“ Wait what?” the sound of metal hitting metal pulled your attention to the same mysterious hero that saved you the first time. “ This feels a bit like fate and it’s low key strange.”

 Leaning onto the dog you were able to get up and open the door. The sudden shifting sound made you notice that the pup was leaving. You quickly grabbed it by the tail. “ No you don’t. I almost died trying to find your furry ass. You are coming with me.”  the dog seemed confused or maybe you were still in a daze. 

 The thing you were sure about tho was that it was a male. He followed you into the elevator and kept close, letting you lean onto him when you were losing your footing. The moment you opened your apartment door, he hesitated to walk in.

“ Come on, don’t be shy.” with a few pulls from your side he finally stepped in. Maybe it was because of the change in the scenery, but the pup didn't even make a move. It was standing there like a new plush toy that you just bought and breathing heavily taking in the atmosphere around it.

"Are you getting comfortable in there?" You peeked your head out of the kitchen, but he was still standing in the middle of the room. You sighed and waddled over.

"I let you in so you are allowed to make yourself comfortable." placing a bowl of water next to the fireplace, you sat back down " It's one thing to be shy but you don't have to be at all. Come here."you patted a place next to you and he finally walked over ,curled up into a fluffy donut and calmed down.

"Oh lord!" your nose just scrunched up "Wet dog, not a good perfume idea." One option was to towel dry him, another to let him naturally dry next to the fire place, but since you didn't know how long he was out there, you were firm about what you were planning to do.

"Ok." You said a bit deep while getting up "It's settled then. You are taking a shower." Clapping your hands you pulled the pup to your bathroom "For once I am sooo glad this apartment is big. Who knows what it would have been if I couldn't fit you in here."

  You turned on the shower just to adjust the water so it wasn’t too cold or too warm. The bathroom was isolated from the rest of the house and you couldn’t hear the outside anymore. Wetting the pup’s fur, you were about to pull the shampoo from the rack next to the shower door, when your shirt got stuck on it.

“I need to change into something else. If I get this shirt wet it will shrink and I am not planning to go on a diet.” you ran out of the bathroom as fast as you came back in. Your body had on it a short shirt tied up at the chest and a pair of pink panties. “Ok, all ready.Come here pooch.” but the dog had it’s back towards you “What is wrong?” he let out a small whimper when you pulled him close to you suddenly by his back legs.

“Hold still now.” grabbing the bottle of lavender shampoo, you placed a small dollop of it on your palm “Hmmm, you are a big boy, probably the equivalent of 1 bear or 20 wigs.I will add a bit more.” squeezing the bottle a bit longer this time let almost half of it spill out “Oh well.” 

 Rubbing your hands together you started lathering the dog from head to toe, focusing on his paws and tummy.He was jumping away when you were cleaning his stomach area “I get it I get it.You are shy, I will stop.” 

 Grabbing the shower head ,you looked at him “Don’t worry we are almost done here.” turning it on firstly splashed your chest. Pulling onto the shirt you noticed it become translucent “Aw man, well I should have expected this.” you started rising off the shampoo as best as you could. “There, all done.It wasn’t too bad now was it?”

 You walked out the bathroom, changed into dry clothes fast and ran back to the dog. You threw a gigantic towel on his head and he panicked. Looking at the circles the dog was making made you burst in laughter and help him out. “Sorry sorry.”

 Making sure the pup was next to the fire place, you kept rubbing the towel all over him until he was as dry as the desert.

“Ah!”you plopped onto his body, making him jump a bit “You smell sooo good.” rolling over onto your back, you were looking at the ceiling and just enjoying the sounds of the crackling flame and the howling winds.It felt so peaceful and almost like a fantasy story.

“You know.” your voice spoke out calmly “This is feels like one of the stories I used to read about when I was little.”you crooked your head towards the pup, giving him a serious look “You are not a man that was cursed into a dog form are you?” you felt as if he stopped breathing for a second before giggling to yourself and laying back onto him “I am joking. So this is what it feels to talk to your pets. I mean you are not my pet, probably have an owner.”

  You let your hand travel to his neck, but no leash was there to identify him as someone’s dog.As he seemed to like it, you continued to run your fingertips through his dark and soft fur. 

“You can stay with me.I mean....if you want.”you sighed “Get’s kind of lonely being by myself all the time. I was ok with it at first but now, I am not so sure about it.”

 There was a moment of silence were only the ambiance in the room was ruling, until you felt the soft fur envelop you.He came closer and licked your cheek a few times. Pursing yourself up onto your elbows, you looked him with a spark in your eyes.

“I will take that as a yes.But...” you paused “I need to give you a name.” sitting up cross legged, you began looking at him from head to toe “I won’t give you a very manly name since you are scary enough as is. What about.....mmmm. Nunu!” the dog’s tail perked up “Yeah, you look like a Nunu to me.” you cupped his cheeks and started messing up his coat “Nunu, you are such a cute Nunu.” 

  The dog was getting annoyed but before it was about to growl, his eyes met yours. You had stopped moving and were giving him the brightest smile one could receive. It was warm and kind, your eyes were relaxed and filled with love, such pure energy. “My Nunu.” you scratched behind his ear ,as he closed his eyes and leaned into it without a hesitation.

  The petting session continued till 11 when you were already fast asleep. The fire burned out and it started getting colder and colder. Nunu woke up when he felt you nuzzling yourself into his fur. His head came close to yours and sniffed you, before giving you a quick lick. 

  Moon light was creeping in from the big windows, but suddenly got covered by a big shadow. It wasn’t looming over you, it had more of a safe and protective feeling to it. Your body almost instantly moved up as if on it’s own and met the comforting covers of the bed. A soft blanket moved up your body. One way to REname a character with internal story logic

I want to talk a moment about Zephyr.

Not the wind.

My character. 

(He wishes he was this tough) Not even really the person but his NAME itself, Zephyr, and how it changed.

One of the things I don’t mention too much just to avoid trouble is how extremely different Knights of Day is now compared to how it was originally. At its early height, Knights of Day peaked at 4 authors. The goal was in no way to publish or publicize any of it. It wasn’t even really meant to be any sort of cohesive story. Or even to consist of cohesive stories rather than “adventures” for fun. I’m not even sure I can tell you WHAT it was. It wasn’t quite a piece of fiction, it wasn’t quite a table top rpg, it wasn’t quite rp’ing. It was just its own behemoth of a thing that included all of those. Compared to 1 book and 1 book in progress now.

Case in point: Fun Adventure #3 was ~

Kinda John Edward but real & real evil

Set up: Most Mediums are terrible people who fake their powers to rip victims off when they’re at their most emotionally vulnerable. Because when you’ve just irrevocably lost one of the most important people in your life you’ll pay anything or do anything for the even the illusion of getting them back.

What if: Imagine someone who can really do everything they say they can do… but they’re still a terrible predator trying to take advantage of people when they’re at their most emotionally vulnerable - they just have more power to make it even worse.

Mission: Save young suddenly widowed mega-rich heiress Helena Lawson from real Medium but still conniving con-man Kenton Dean. Because the greedy, racist, no goo Ted Lawson doesn’t want Kenton Dean to get the money instead of himself. And Ted is willing to pay exorbitantly to make sure it doesn’t. So James and Zeferrello are tasked with finding any reason to separate Helena and Kenton.

Twist: Yeah, Kenton Dean CAN summon and control the dead but it’s so much worse than that. He can summon and control the GOD of the dead. Assuming, of course, that all of this isn’t the god of the dead actually controlling Kenton Dean for its own purposes.

Which Became The Hidden and the Maiden. But instead of a climactic conflict between James, Zephyr, Kenton Dean, and Kherty-Aken decided by force, force of will, and clever use of all magic available inside the seat of Kenton Dean’s power, his theater, “Kinda John Edward but real & real evil” ended with a mildly tense chat between James and Zefferello versus Kherty Aken just kinda hanging out, tensely, next to an ambulance. James points out that Kenton Dean has reprogrammed Kherty Aken like a computer to just believe all this BS. Kherty Aken realizes, Oh Shi-! he’s right, and flys away. Next day, paper says Kenton Dean is dead. So the general idea is there but just not at all the same when you look close.

As an aside, this is by the way why most writing teachers dismiss ‘ideas’ as the least important element of story telling. One version of this ‘idea’ I stuff under a rug and pretend doesn’t exist. The other I sell in paperback for $10 a pop. If the fundamental idea hasn’t changed really, why the vast difference in price? Because of the execution. And if execution is more than infinitely greater in effect 0 -> 10 why bother putting that much effort into the idea when, even if you only go to 5 through execution, that will have more effect than any idea will. I am not 100% convinced by this line of reasoning but it’s not meritless either. A bad idea well written will just get more in the marketplace of ideas than a good idea poorly written. A bad idea badly written is doomed. A good idea well written may or may not do as well as the mediocrity. So, I disagree that it is of zero importance but I do think it is certainly not the most important element for 3/4’s of all story types. Ok, that’s another post, enough asides.

The real thing I’m actually thinking about is the Zefferello to Zephyr change. Zefferello was Zephyr’s original name. The author who created the original character said specifically her thoughts were that she had never had any character under any situation whose name started with Z. So she wanted a Z character and she plucked the rest out of thin air because. And because it didn’t matter, that was cool enough. So he was Zefferello for the first few years of life. No particular reason why. Never mind that nothing in any back round of anything anywhere would give Zefferello as a name.

It was only as I was moving from the first to the second draft of The Hidden and the Maiden that it was really bothering me about this Korean-American dude with the abusive Super Whitey Mega Rich father, the utterly absent and possibly dead Korean Trophy Wife mother, and the abusive DID having ghost but still white mother. Why would any of them give him that name?

Well, the father might do it just to torture his son throughout life. He’s that kind of asshole. As little as he is in it, I actually think of Zephyr’s father as the Antagonist for Knights of Day because he is just pure dagnasty evil because he likes it. He may not appear most on the page or wield the most power - partially because he’s just not my favorite kind of villain, at all, his side-kicks is way more my speed - but there’s no denying he does the most damage. BUT, the father is also very image conscious. Part of what he likes is doing terrible things while other people praise him for it. For making people suffer but having no one believe them because he is such a paragon of virtue. One of his side kicks actually got James to just start punching him toward the end because he kept talking about what a saint Zephyr’s father was and all the haters just didn’t understand what a wonderful person he was and how hard he worked when he never had to to improve the life of others. If I recall correctly James literally held a knife on the guy and pointing to Zephyr: ‘you had to fucking know what that motherfucker was doing to him! You evil lying sack of fucking shit!’ So… torture wasn’t going to work for a reason.

So I’m looking for any great people in history with the name Zefferello. Nope. Nada. Is it by some miracle a Korean name that Eun Ae Gwon might have given him? Nope. No dice. And slowly all eyes  turn to JJ. JJ is nuts. There’s no getting around it. But I’m rarely happy with that as an explanation. Especially with JJ because most of what she does that SEEMS nuts, isn’t. The fundamental rule I made for JJ fairly early on is that she is ALWAYS up to something. She is playing every angle. She is working every leverage. She is a survivor in a way that most people will never be. She’s dead and she is still playing to win. So she will do things that appear unreasonable at point A in time in order to increase her odds of getting what she wants in point B in time.

And I’m looking at that name. That ello. That’s sounds latinate to me. And masculine. I already knew Zefferello’s real name at this point, and it had a Jr. at the end and I started wondering if maybe, just maybe, JJ gave Zefferello a different Jr. name. A name for the father that she wished Zefferello had. Instead of the one he did. He’s hers, and what better to claim a baby she would never hold than to rename him into a family that she wanted to exist but never did. That’s very JJ.

At which point I’m reviewing JJ’s history. It’s sparse-ish at that time. But I know when she got pregnant and I know more or less what happened to her from that point until she died. And there’s nothing in there to hint at a Zefferello Sr. But… there were already some hints about there maybe being a Zefferella. And of course that’s not a name either. But fiddle with the spelling and drop the “el” sound and you do get a Greek female name: Zephyra \

And that was the lightning bolt of inspiration and change. That JJ’s second and last love of her life was a fellow prostitute named Zephyra, and IF JJ could rewrite reality to be anything she wanted then her son would also be Zephyra’s - that they would be the family unit and the other would be the ghostly illusion. And with Zephyra as a real name, I also had a male equivalent: Zephyr. Sounds similar but much more plausible that he might somehow obtain it. Plus, with the idea of Zephyra, his name also becomes a key to unlocking tons of emotion and backstory.

And you’ll know it’s important the second that this repressed little guy walking around giving out the name of Zephyr Wayne, shamefully cringe-admits that his legal name is Peter Bailey Jr. That that exists at all says that there is a story to find down in there and that it isn’t a simple one.

So that’s one to rewrite a name based on the internal logic of a story. Zephyr’s name was researched and found but never picked out of a name directory. It was back-engineered to tell the story I wanted to tell and avoid the random story I didn’t. By following the logic that might lead to a name like his, I was able to find the one I thought was right for him.

And, since the original Cup Bearer was one of the winds, that also worked to my advantage… though it is generally considered the wrong wind. Oy. Which I’ll probably just end up deleting because Zephyr’s name is better for a story hook than anything I made with Thulebelore being the General of the Western Winds.

Fairy tale

Illegitmate son of a king and a maid. The queen found out and was furious. After the birth, the maid was put to death. The baby was supposed to be killed too, but a councillor of the King- and his rival- was ordered to do it. He, however, spared the baby and took him to a distant kingdom and left him at a mill.

The old Miller raised the baby and loved him like his own. Nearly everyone else deems him a founding and judges him for it.

A draft into a way with his birth father's kingdom might get him recognized, captured, and bright to the castle.

The father and stepmother have no children. And, since the king wants the rule to stay in his line, he wants the Miller boy to be his successor. But the queen doesn't and tries to make his life hell. And though the king takes him in and wants him to rule, he doesn't regret abandoning his son and doesn't feel anything toward him.

A princess, a prince, and possibly the nobles also ill treat the Miller boy.

He doesn't want to rule and in the end denounces his father and stepmother. He returns to the mill and his agreed father and takes over.

The old Miller used to be pretty well off, but loses his wealth at some point.

The queen ordered the deaths of the maid and the baby.

Neither she nor the king were good rulers or people, and for this reason, the Miller boy does try for a while. He wants to make the kingdom better for the people who have to live there. But he's miserable, he hates court life, and he misses his adopted father. He simply can't stay, even for the people and leaves. The rule then goes to the prince who ill used the Miller, and he's no better than the king. But somehow, the councillor ends up becoming the king, and then things get better and the kingdom prospers.

The only other one in his home kingdom to be kind to the boy is a girl in the village. She loves him and remains true after he's gone. After he returns, they marry and run the mill together.

She's also ostracized in the community. Whether based on race, religion, or both, I haven't decided yet. Thinking both though? Maybe?

The Miller boy looks like the king and fights like him, and that's what gets him recognized by his father's men.

He's usually timid, peaceful, kind, gentle, and selfless. But he is capable of leading and can have a temper. Especially when the old Miller or the girl are being ridiculed.

The Miller believes he died in the war and that's why he doesn't come home. But the girl doesn't and tries to find him.

The prince and princess are the godchildren of the queen, and though she hates kids, she wants one of them to take the throne. They're just as wicked and selfish as she is.

The boy considers the Miller his father, not the king.

His mother was probably quite young when she had him, probably late teens? But the was quite an age gap between her and the king as well as a power difference.

The boy has a bird he rescued as a chick that refuses to leave him. I'm thinking either a raven or a bird of prey like an eagle?

The councillor may also have had feelings for his mother. And here's also a better person, so that's why he saved the boy. If so, he's much closer to her age than the king is. Probably still older, but not nearly as much.

Modern

He was a child of an affair. His mother didn't know his father was married, and as such or his name on the birth certificate. He didn't want to believe it was his and demanded a paternity test. Even then, he wanted nothing to do with the baby. And when the mother died in childbirth, the father abandoned him, leaving him to be raised by his maternal grandfather.

However, his father is rich and powerful, and tries to take him away later.

Stepmother resents him.

His grandfather runs a bakery or whatever a modern equivalent of a Miller would be

The boy's allergic to dogs and cats, and might have a few birds.

He may have been born premature and was frail. May have asthma and/or other health problems like a bad heart.

He does drama and choir in school. Voice claim still to be picked.

Most people know who his father is, and it's a widely known story. But he never visits, calls, sends cards or child support. Basically wants nothing to do with him until he tries to take him. This probably results in a legal battle between the father and grandfather.

He drives a beat up old truck.

He's not exactly popular, but he does have friends, especially in drama and choir.

His father likely had a company he doesn't want going to his partner when he dies. And he also doesn't want his money going to anyone. However, after the boy returns to his grandfather, he refuses anything from his father. The father gets out of it by leaving everything to his wife's godson. But the godson may be caught embezzling and squandering his fortune, so it goes to the partner anyway.

He doesn't have his father's last name, but his mother's.

He's pretty technically savvy. He may have resigned and built the bakery website on his own, as well as handbuilding a computer on his own. He also does the sound and light design for the plays even if he didn't run them during the show.

Plays at least 1 instrument, still to be decided.

Goes to a community college to double major in business and cooking to help his grandfather in the shop. Also minors in some kind of tech course.

Speaks English and Portuguese.

Had to struggle for money for school, back bills, and survival until his father's partner takes over. He offers to help, but they refuse. He at least convinces the grandfather and grandson to let him cover tuition and back bills.

Oh, anon. This literally all feels as if my younger self came into my ask box just now to ask for advice. 

I understand your pain, I really do, I went through so many of the same thought processes you’re describing now. It’s good that you’re aware of compulsory heterosexuality, since I believe that will make sorting your feelings easier. Still, I recommend you look through our tag (if you haven’t already) to read more thoughts on this. It’ll help. 

I obviously can’t tell you what your sexuality is for you, that’s your own journey to make, but this sounds so much like my own experience that I’m pretty sure what the answer is already.

Anon, let me tell you a story, I went to a catholic school and while my parents are pretty liberal and not that religious (in fact, my dad’s an atheist) I was also raised with the idea that ok, there were gay people out there, and I didn’t care what other people did with their lives! But honestly that was kind of weird and I couldn’t be like them, because they weren’t normal, like I should be. I was bullied a lot as a kid, because I was weird and ugly and way too shy and easy to pick on, so I grew up with this idea that whatever else happened, I had to stop being like that, I had to be beautiful and normal and acceptable. And that of course included a perfect fantasy of marrying the man of my dreams after he fell in love with men when I suddenly grew up to be the most beautiful woman there was, and having kids, and holding down a successful job that I was happy doing and having lots of money and well, just having the most perfect life. How could I not want that? Ever since I was old enough to walk, society fed me the idea that this was my ideal endgame, how could we ALL not dream about that at some point? 

I used to be obsessed with those stories where the “ugly” girl suddenly turns beautiful and the Nice Perfect Popular Boy finally notices her and they get together, those stories were my dream life. As a kid and young teen I’d fantasize about them constantly, I’d make up characters that would always end up fulfilling those same tropes. It was the way to prove to all those who ever called me ugly or belittled me because I was nerdy that “see? I got the happy ending” so when I was twelve, and suddenly all the girls were having crushes on boys I felt nothing for, while I started noticing seemingly out of the blue just how incredibly beautiful so many girls my age and older were, I got veeery scared. I couldn’t like girls like that, I wasn’t like that, I was already weird and had no friends, so how could I ever hope to find a girl who liked girls who’d like me? And if I did, everyone already hated me, so how would I bear it? The stares and the insults and the danger we’d face if people saw us together on the street? So I pushed that attraction down as far as I could, I convinced myself I was actually just too inmature to start thinking about crushes and all that stuff, and obviously when I was mature enough and the time came, I’d like boys, because that’s what Normal Girls did right? And I had to be normal.

In my school’s equivalent of US’ eighth grade, a new boy came to our class, he was pretty, and friendly, and most importantly, blonde! and he was the school sports star! It felt like every movie-like fantasy I ever had come to life. Every girl was in love with him, so one time I had a dream where we were dating. I woke up being absolutely ecstatic, that must have meant I had a crush right? I liked a boy? I was definitely straight?

I never actually began feeling nervous around this boy, or looking at him any more than usual until I had this dream and decided that meant I was in love. I told a friend eventually because I was excited about being in love and the fantasy I had created for myself about our perfect relationship (which did involve us kissing and having sex, and I never actually felt turned on about it but I did imagine it a lot because it meant we were In Love, so those fantasies happen even if you don’t actually like like the person in question, dw!), and isn’t that what you do when you like someone? Gossip about it with your friends? She told some of my bullies and the dude found out, so he started laughing at me in the middle of the class and calling me ugly and saying he was traumatized at the mere idea of me liking him. 

And I… felt nothing. I was angry of course, and sad, but it was just the same anger and sadness I felt when some random I didn’t like made fun of me, it wasn’t even like what I felt when former friends said nasty stuff about me. And I wanted to be heartbroken I wanted to wallow in the misery and the drama of it, but I just wasn’t, it was the same “well this shit sucks and I’m angry about it but it happens everyday so wyd?” There was no deeper feeling there, not even any special resentment, there was nothing. I never felt anything ever again when I looked at this boy.

Now, sometime later, the same boy starts dating a girl from our class, and it was around the same time that I was coming to terms with the fact that the latent attraction I had started to feel for women when I was younger had never actually gone away but rather had grown. Things were purely about sexual attraction for me at that point, not romantic feelings. I hadn’t actually been in love with a girl either by that point. Because even tho I was accepting my sexual attraction to women, I still had the idea in my mind that ideally I would end up with a boy, because when so much of my hopes for the future relied of me being beautiful and a man falling in love with me forever and ever so that I could have a normal future, letting go of that dream took a while. I called myself bisexual for a while, only to realize very little later that it didn’t actually fit me. When I did, it was hard, because I had to re-come out again to my mom and the two friends I had told, and that really scared me, because I felt like some fake, like what I felt was not actually real. I put it off, and my friends & mom were accepting but they also were like “you’re just confused about your sexuality!!/this is just a phase!!” so that fed into my insecurities. Even when I realized I was sexually into women only, I still hadn’t fallen in love with one, so that made things more confusing for me (I hadn’t fallen for any boy other than the one I mentioned earlier and one I met on a vacation that thought I liked for like a week because he had a pretty voice and was pretty androgynous lmao, but again, no heartbreak when he went away)

Eventually, (funnily enough through fandoms and f/f ships and fics that depicted them in loving relationships, And I cried when I read about girls kissing too, at first I thought it was because I was a Good Straight Ally, but I was just a lesbian lmao) I realized that I could also be happy in a relationship with a woman, that it was not only a possible future for me, but one that I wanted, one that felt right, one in which I wouldn’t be the beautiful, perfect, feminine, smart, succesful career woman I had dreamed of as a kid, but in which I’d be me, with all my quirks and faults, with another woman with her own quirks and faults who’d love me for who I am, because that was possible! It was possible to be happy like that!. When I realized this, that me liking girls romantically and sexually, and exclusively girls was okay, it felt like a veil was lifted from my eyes. Suddenly, all the feelings and attraction I had thought I had felt for boys paled in comparison to the intensity of what I felt for women, I learned what actual sexual desire was like, I yearned for a future with a real me in it with a real woman by my side, instead of the fake ideal I’d wanted to be when I was younger. It was around that time I fell in love for the first time.

Remember how I mentioned the boy I used to “like” got a girlfriend? Well, guess who I fell for? Me and her were assigned seats together one year in high school, and I got to know her through the first term, every time liking her more and more, until one day, she just walks into class, and I think she did something different with her hair? Whatever it was, seeing her felt like someone punching the breath out of me, it felt like watching literal perfection embodied. And I was gone, I was just so so sooo gone. I felt sparks when we sat next to each other, I couldn’t stop smiling like a fool whenever I looked at her, she’d say something nice to me and it felt like my soul was flying out of my body. And of course it was idealized, it was a crush on a girl I didn’t know that well, but the feelings I had, I had for her, for her actual personality, her actual sweetness, her actual kindness, even her actual rashness sometimes, not the fantasy I had made up of her that I projected onto her like I did when I “liked” her boyfriend. I liked her as a person. Plus the intensity of both crushes was just so fucking different. When I liked her, I cried when we were apart and at the thought of her with her dumbass idiot boyfriend, I listened to a love song and could relate to it for the first time. I understood finally why people would write poetry and songs and do all sorts of crazy things for this feeling. 

Tldr: I also fantasized about the ideal boy and I was never able to allow myself to feel anything for a girl because of how much I had repressed my sexuality due to fear of backlash until I was able to recognize that yes, liking women was OK and then all my repressed feelings came pouring out like a tsunami. 

If that sounds like something you can kind of relate to, then that’s your answer anon. However, it might not be, or maybe you don’t know if it is yet. That’s alright! Sexuality can be complicated and it can take a long time to figure it out. You’re not on a deadline here, you don’t have to stress about it.

As for the normal part, yeah being a lesbian in this society sucks a lot. And I still get terrified of the idea that I will not be “normal” and that I can never be happy. Even if I know deep in my heart that I can never be happy with a man, sometimes I wonder if it’d be worth it to spare me the pain. The answer? Hell no, I’ve got one life, one, what’s the point of wasting it on loveless unfulfilled relationships when I could try to go for someone I’ll actually be happy with? There’ll be pain, of course there will be, I live in a small town and I’ve only just started meeting other lesbians & bi girls offline this year because I’ve gone to university, and I’ve only ever actually started talking to and becoming actual friends with the ones I knew online this year too because I was so terrified before! All of them tell me about their hurt, and how lesbophobia affects them a lot, and yet I see them talking about how much they love their girlfriends/wives (I don’t have that because I’m an awkward potato but I’m trying) and also other lesbians, and it gives me hope, because I can be just like them, finding genuine happiness amidst the pain.

ok but snippet of this little fic i’ve been working on coz plot bunnies are annoying af and i’m too excited to post it even if i barely have a quarter of it done whoops 

...so of course when she noticed that Lance had caught her in one of her moments of (admittedly longingly) staring at Shiro, Katie’s first response was to scowl at his shocked face.

It proved to be ineffective.

“Hunk. Hunk. Hunk.” He chanted his name repeatedly all while slapping his arm. Hunk had the misfortune to have been drinking water when Lance started hitting, eyes watering as he promptly swallowed a little too quickly while Lance kept hitting him like some excited lunatic.

Which he kind of was at this moment, now that Katie thought about it.

“What?” the bulky man turned to him as he set down his drink.

“It’s Pidge!” he squealed, and Katie should’ve set him to the hospital by now based on the fury in her stare.

“What about her?” Hunk humored, giving her his own furtive glance.

Hunk should be loaded on a stretcher by now, too.

“She has a thing for Shiro!”

No, scratch sending them to the hospital.

Lance should be dead on the spot. Right now.

Nothing more than a lanky corpse sprawled over the lunch table.

Yeah, that seemed like a pretty picture.  

Somehow, he seemed unfazed and kept prodding, “You totally have a crush on Shiro!”

Katie opened her mouth, a string of excuses already warm and ready to use at the tip of her tongue yet falling dead before they left her mouth.

Lance was definitely an idiot but he wasn’t that stupid, and even if she did come up with the perfect excuse, he still wouldn’t buy it and would keep pestering her until he accidentally talks about it with Shiro around and spill her deepest darkest secret to the one person she didn’t want to know about.

Denial would get her nowhere, she realized.

Not with Lance.

Begrudgingly (and not to mention very, very, very reluctantly), she nodded.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh.”

Lance started jumping up and down on his seat, jostling the food on the table as he did, and she and Hunk had to scramble for their drinks before they spilled all over the place.

“Dude!” Hunk called.

“Calm down, Lance!”

“How can I? You like Shiro!”

Katie ran a palm over her face. “Well didn’t you? Didn’t Keith?” she jutted her chin in the direction of the red leather jacket-clad boy, still falling in line to pay for lunch. “Didn’t all of you have a crush on Shiro at some point?”

“Well, yeah.” Lance said like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Which it was. “But I got over it. So did Keith.”

“I dunno about you, Pidge,” Hunk started. “But the rest of us just had the closest male equivalent to a fangirl crush-“

“Man crush.” Lance quickly supplied.

“-man crush -thank you Lance- on him.” he picked off a pineapple chunk from his pizza and plopped it in his mouth before adding, “You on the other hand.” He swallowed. “You’re an entirely different story.”

Katie just narrowed his eyes. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Oh she knew exactly what it meant.

She just needed to clarify so she could have a valid reason to murder the two of them in cold blood right there.

“Sure we had a crush on him coz he was you know, Shiro, but you,” Lance gestured to her entire upper body. “You got it really bad.”

Katie rolled her eyes, trying her best to fight down the flush that started creeping up her cheeks. “Shut up, Lance.” Finding it to be a losing battle, Katie decided to put her energy on something more productive and satisfying.

Like lifting her foot to jam it into Lance’s shin.

The resulting screech from her lanky friend was enough to replace the blush with a grin.

“Dios mio, Pidge-“

“I’m not gonna tell him.”

“But Pidgey-“

“Call me a Pokemon one more time, Lance, I swear to god-“

“I just don’t get why you won’t just tell him?” Katie just scowled in response and grabbed her juice, aggressively slurping the liquid through the straw.

“Won’t tell who what?” Keith (when did he even get here what the hell) asked as he slipped in the seat beside in between Hunk and Lance.  

“Pidge to Shiro that she likes him.” Hunk supplied after swallowing his mouthful of pizza.

“Tell me something I don’t know.”

Katie flinched on impulse, leading to her choking on her drink and slamming the pouch down as she coughed violently. She felt a hand gently rub her back and saw the water bottle thrusted in her direction, hands moving on their own to open the cap before she took a few greedy gulps until she emptied out the whole thing.

She hadn’t meant to, really, so she turned in the direction of the angel who saved her.

“Thank you.” She said with a weak smile before wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.

“You alright?” Shiro asked, and his infamous dazzling smile was on his face while his hand continued rubbing circles on her back and Katie felt like she was gonna choke again.

“Yeah.” She said, internally wincing when it came out half an octave higher than she anticipated. She let out a cough to clear her throat, trying her best to ignore the weird way Lance was watching her every move.

I’ll just overload his car battery. Or hot wire his phone. Or better yet corrupt his laptop so he has to start his term paper from scratch. Ahh, the powers of technology.

“Sorry about your water.” She lifted it back for emphasis before setting it down on the table. “I’ll pay you back for it.”

“No need.” He said, hand reaching up to squeeze her shoulder.

“Not joining us for lunch?” Lance suddenly piped in. Katie threw him her best smiling death glare.

I’m gonna kill you in you sleep.

Only for the look to drop when she felt Shiro absently rubbing circles into her shoulder and she had to fight back a contented sigh from escaping her lips.

“Not today, guys.” He said, and Katie looked up at him. “Iverson needed me for something.”

The four at the table winced in sympathy. Shiro just shrugged. He turned to Katie and she could’ve sworn the look on his face softened, turned warmer into a look she just realized he only ever gave to her.

“I’ll see you later?”  

And just like that her higher brain function gave out on her, leaving her to manage a small nod in response.

Shiro’s hand went off her shoulder to give her an affectionate ruffle to her hair before waving goodbye and turn to the exit, and all she could do was stare at his back like a dumbass, taking in his straight posture and the defined back muscles she knew to be hidden under his shirt and letterman jacket and-

“Man,” Lance’s voice suddenly drawled out. “You really do have a thing for him.”

Katie kicks up to shove her heel into his other shin as hard as she can, then turns to Hunk with one of her sweetest smiles as Lance let out a howl of pain. “Anyways,” She didn’t miss the way Hunk and Keith practically flinched in place and smiled wider.

I’m gonna preface this by saying that I don’t really see the Star Wars universe operating on the binary gender system. This isn’t just ‘cause I’m hoping for an agender character (I am, but that’s neither here nor there), but because gender’s weird enough on earth like. I think I read somewhere that honey bees have three genders, clown fish change sexes based on necessity, there’s an entire species of lizard with only one gender, and don’t even get me started on how weird angler fish are), and this is if you only take reproductive capabilities into account, and not identities, and this is just one planet. And I’m expected to believe that, with all the countless species and races, only have male/female. AND I SWEAR THIS ISN’T ME BEING ANNOYED OR UPSET AT YOU!! Just sowing my fields with salt for Disney and Lucasfilm tbh

Anyway, on to the meat of the answer!

I’m not going to pretend sexism isn’t a thing in the Star Wars universe, because it absolutely is. From the female Twi’Lek slave trade, the Republic propaganda posters of feminine droids in the boobs-and-butt pose of comics, the little Twi’Lek civvie who told Aayla she couldn’t be a Jedi because she was a girl (to which she replied that, not only was she a Jedi, but she was also the kid’s cousin and was there to save his life), Oked hitting on Ventress and getting mad when she tries to get him to leave her alone (to which she replied by stabbing him. Literally both of them are icons), the fact that in the same episode someone hires the bounty hunters to (unwittingly) transport a kidnapped girl to become some creepy old guy’s wife, the whole thing with Death Watch literally stole a village’s entire population of women just so they’d have people to cook for them, like. This is an actual problem in the universe, but, at the same time, it doesn’t seem to be as much of a thing in the Jedi, and it makes sense. I mean, can you imagine another Jedi telling Adi or Shaak or Aayla or Luminara (Or Yaddle, rip) that they shouldn’t be on the council because women are too emotional, or that they shouldn’t be Jedi, and should be in the kitchen, instead? If Ahsoka heard that? Man, you wouldn’t even need a medical team. Just a bucket and a squeegee, maybe a damp paper towel. Don’t get me wrong, Jedi are absolute jerks to each other, and I’m pretty sure it stems from pitting them against each other at a young age to see who deserves a master and who’s low-key dubbed a failure at the one thing they were raised for, but, even then, it’s more jabs at someone’s lack of skill - again, probably to make them seem less appealing to any potential mentors. Like when the two padawans mock padawan-Anakin for his lack of self-control, or when Bruck Chun nicknamed Obi-Wan ‘Oafy-Wan’ to highlight his clumsiness. Don’t really see gender being brought up, though. Clothing’s gender-neutral, clans were mixed-gender - and, by extension, lessons would be, as well - big events like gatherings were mixed-gender, padawans and masters could be any combination of genders, and, even disregarding the Councils, there are women in pretty lofty positions, like Jocasta being in charge of what’s arguably the biggest store of information in the galaxy. Now, I’m not saying that there’s Absolutely No Sexism In The Order It’s An Objective Fact, just that I haven’t seen any evidence of it. I’ll also be the first to say that my knowledge of Star Wars is kinda limited. But, yes, all that to say that I don’t see gender really being a deciding factor in whether or not he’s comfortable with a person. To add to this, he’s met plenty of people who he’d perceive as being a threat, or capable of being a threat, if they so chose, regardless of gender - and, if you mean in terms of who he’s attracted to, he’s a lovely mixture of pan/demiro and pan/grey-ace. Basically, everyone has the potential to be attractive to him, so that doesn’t help, either. So, again, gender isn’t a factor in determining how comfortable he is around another person.

As for the second part of your question, I find the line between peers and subordinates and superiors tends to blur with him, since he makes friends in all walks of life - from homeless bounty hunters to clone marshals to Jedi Masters on the High Council to I don’t even know who, at this point - it’s gotten delightfully out of control, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. But, for the sake of this question, I’m going to equate ‘peers’ with equals - since this is being written for MainVerse Braig, it’ll be other Padawans. Now, this largely depends on who it is - after all, Obi-Wan is Brag’s superior, and yet Braig’s more comfortable with him than anyone else. And the clones are technically his subordinates, but you’ve seen how he is with Wolffe and Cody. Even though he technically outranks them as a Jedi, he’s never even thought of pulling rank on them, and they’re more likely to call him ‘Bra’ika’ (’little Braig’, a Mando’a term of endearment) than ‘sir’. As a whole, though, he tends to be more comfortable with subordinates. Sure, he has his friends across the board, but, as a general rule. His subordinates include younger padawans, Initiates, younglings, clones, and probably Temple staff. Among younger Jedi, I imagine Braig’s got a fair bit of clout. Not necessarily because of anything he’s done, personally, but simply because he’s Obi-Wan’s padawan. Canon basically establishes Obi as the Order’s equivalent of a celebrity; All the kids both want him as their mentor and want to be him when they grow up, and even older Jedi use him as an example of a ‘perfect Jedi’. Braig, being his padawan, is sort of a gateway to all things Obi - whenever it’s his turn to be on nursery duty for chores, he’s probably surrounded by littles wanting to hear stories of Space Dad. Add to that the fact that he’s older, more experienced, and higher up in the Order’s hierarchy, he feels more secure around them, and less like he has something to prove - sure, he wants to show he’s a good commander for the troops, but it’s not the end of the world if he’s not the best commander in the Order. When it comes to peers, that is, other padawans around his age (usually only with those he’s not close to, as he doesn’t really have this problem with his friends), he still feels like he has to be better than them - residual behaviour from when they were competing for masters. This is at its worst when he’s thirteen, having come fresh out of Initiate-hood, but dissipates, the older he gets. By the time he’s late fifteen-early sixteen, it’s basically gone completely. He still has moments, especially when he’s actively challenged or otherwise confronted, when he can get a bit bristly in regards to his position in the Order, but, for the most part, he’s grown out of it. As for why he’d be uncomfortable around his superiors - to put it simply, they quite literally control every aspect of his life. They control what training is available to him and when, whether or not he’d be allowed to stay with his mentor and by extension what room he lives in, what activities are available during his leisure time and how much of that time he has, whether or not he stays a padawan, and, if he doesn’t, whether he’d be sent to be a farmer, doctor, or teacher, or whether or not he’s allowed to stay in the Order, and, if not, if he’s to be left on his ow, or sent off to live with a family he never really met. While he doesn’t completely realise how much power they have over him - at least, not consciously - he is aware that they’re In Charge, capitals for emphasis, and he’s been raised to view them as Better Than Him in some way, so, having to remember and act on the proper protocols at all times, while not a problem for him, having grown up with them, it does make reactions feel a bit less personal. As I said, there are exceptions, based on how close he is on a personal level to any particular master, and how strictly said master observes protocol. So, again, he’s most comfortable around Obi-Wan, and to lesser degree some of the other masters. Quinlan Vos is an interesting fusion of someone Braig’s comfortable with, and someone who doesn’t seem too hung up on protocol. Can you imagine bowing and scraping and adding ‘master’ to the end of every sentence with Vos? He’d probably think Braig bashed his head too hard while sparring. 

So, tl;dr, gender doesn’t really matter, and, though there are exceptions, he generally feels most comfortable around those considered his ‘subordinates’.

Puppy Play

For a long time, the idea of puppy play held no interest for me whatsoever. I associated puppy play with annoying guys who tended to bark in the middle of play parties whenever they saw each other or who acted in ways that I frankly found annoying. They would talk about head-space and it all seemed like an exaggerated sense of make belief. “Yeah you’re a puppy…woof woof. Well I’m a fucking pirate, Arrrrrr” It didn’t interest me and so I tended to stand at the edges. I knew guys who identified as puppies but I didn’t usually interact with them that way. I recognized that puppy-play seemed like an entry point for some guys into the broader leather community but it often seemed that they had serious interests in the darkly erotic aspects of the community but got subverted into a non-sexual role play that just seemed silly. It was a frustrating process of which I was aware and wary. I saw a lot of guys who thought they were going to be a part of something really fun, sexy, and exciting and who instead found it disappointing. Then things changed. Two things happened to me. The first was a puppy party at IML. While there were plenty of guys crawling around and playing with the dreaded squeaky toys, there was a small cadre of guys playing in a way that was extremely feral, raw, animalistic, and sexual. They interacted in ways that didn’t seem forced or pretend. It was real and it was fucking hot. I remember how my interest in the overall puppy scene began to grow…(.among other things). The second was playing with someone who identified as a puppy that embodied all of that raw animalistic sexuality in a way that seemed so genuine that it totally blew me away. They would react in ways that were not forced. When they got excited their butt wagged because that was the most natural thing for them to do. They begged to have their tail inserted because it was the natural extension of a deeply powerful experience. I saw a vision of what I had been missing. I started to get interested in something that I had thought I would never find interesting. In fact, I kept thinking about it and talking to people and suddenly found that I was no longer at the edges but becoming more and more involved. But, I never found that same energy in the public puppy experience. It happened in small groups but never at an “event”. It was at this point that I began to bump up against the predominant model in the “puppy-community”. For some reason, there was a lot of stuff about how puppy play was not sexual. There was a lot of lip service to the idea that we all get to define what the experience is for ourselves but in truth, the dominant theme was that sexuality was NOT really welcome and only barely tolerated. I’ve heard all the reasons for that. I’ve had the conversations. I have no intention of arguing. BUT I have decided to speak my mind. SO for what it is worth… In my opinion ( your mileage may differ)… FOR ME…..My puppy play is deeply deeply sexual. It is about abandoning rational thought and acting in ways that are primitive and disinhibited. It tends to become very tactile, very olfactory, and very oral. In other words, there is a lot of rubbing, a lot of sniffing, and a lot of licking. While that human part of someone is never completely gone, it is allowed to take a back seat. One of the examples I often think of is when a puppy I was playing with had to pee. I took him outside rather than going into the bathroom. Without thinking about it, I noticed that the puppy lifted his leg to piss. I don’t think it was planned. It was just natural. In the same way, there is a lot of sexual stimulation going on and when that stimulation reaches orgasm, there tends to be a lot of howling or some other animalistic noises. Part of what I find so exciting, is playing with someone who is able to give up some of the rational part of themselves and let a more primitive drive take over. Rather than thinking about how they might like to sniff my crotch, or asking to so do, they just do it. I have to manage that. It becomes playful. I began to play with guys who when they got hard, they would just naturally drop to all fours. In conversations, they would make noises that came out of them so naturally , they didn’t even notice that they had answered the phone with a chuffing noise. When they were really turned on, their tongue would loll out. These weren’t things that were discussed they just happened. But becoming more involved in my own puppy experience, didn’t keep me from observing things in the broader community. It also didn’t stop me from being an opinionated asshole. So let me rant about a few other things for just a second. In my world, I deal in metaphor. I think that metaphor is powerful and often a door into understanding. Puppy play for me is a deeply powerful metaphor. And few things are more powerful metaphors that gear. As a leatherman, my gear is essential to me. It is an expression of important aspects of my self. It MEANS something to me. Puppies tend to get gear obsessed. It is interesting that each will find what works for them. Some find that covering their face frees to them play in ways that if their face were not covered they could not play. Others have told me that when their hands are put in their puppy mitts, things really transition. Almost all associate meaning and power to their collar. To each their own. The puppies I play with tend not to wear mitts but often curl their hands and do not use their fingers. They will “paw” at things that way. I think it is very hot. When a puppy can’t use his paws effectively and I need to lend him a hand so to speak. They usually don’t wear hoods, because the hood interferes with the hyper-orality that is so much a part of our play. Knee pads have become essential after too many episodes of rug burn. But puppy tails simply amaze me. I love playing with puppies that really get into having a tail. First of all, when it fits right, every time they move, the tail wags and when it wags it bumps up against their prostate….hell, what’s not to like. I love inserting a puppy’s tail and I pride myself if taking the time, the preparation, and the lube to make it comfortable. It is the first notch in a ladder of trust. That somebody trusts me enough that they become that vulnerable really turns me on. And when I do it successfully, the positive results are immediate. They move, it feels great, they move more, it feels even better. A perfect system. Which brings me to an observation about “show tails”. You know the ones that attach to a belt? In my mind that is the equivalent of a leather guy going to bar with his gear in a suitcase. I think so-called show tails are an abomination. BUT I also think there is a reason for them. And this is the place where I tend to rant like a mad-man. SO I apologize in advance. The reason show tails exist is that most puppy handlers are idiots. Most handlers have no idea what they are doing. And in part, this is the fault of the guys who have de-sexualized puppy play. Look, it’s really very simple, Sex takes skill. Ya have to know what you are doing to make it work. It is like most of the things in our BDSM world. You gotta learn first. But how hard it is to call some guy “Fluffy” and play fetch? Any dolt can do that. So there are a lot of guys who hold themselves out to be handlers and have no skill. Those are the same ignoramuses who conflate being a puppy with being subservient. They stand around with their buddies and tell the puppy to go get drinks. They hand the pup some cash and give them the order and the puppy wanders off to be surrounded by a bunch of guys who have no idea what is going on and have been drinking. Without fail, some guy grabs the tail and yanks on it. “What’s this?” It is the handler’s job to make sure that never happens. If they did their job, there would be no need for a show tail. When I am playing with a puppy, I am TOTALLY responsible for our play AND for their wellbeing. I have to make sure they are ok, safe, hydrated, comfortable. I have to check that their gear is on right. I have to monitor the scene so carefully that and do it without the benefit of language. All while having a good time. Letting a puppy run loose so that I can socialize says that maybe we need to teach handlers how to handle and stop having events that purport to be about puppy play when it is just about using puppies as an entertainment or a distraction. Frankly, I tend to play with guys who would rather bite your hand that lick it if you haven’t earned their trust and respect. And please note, that trust and respect is EARNED not given freely just because you say you are a handler on Recon. The idea of puppy events taps into stuff I have written about the tail wagging the dog (re: leather contests). I’ll leave that alone for a bit. BUT let me beat one dead horse for just a minute. MY PUPPY PLAY….MINE…that means I get to define it. My puppy play takes place in sacred male space. The amount of trust and the erotic energy are very powerful, but they are very fragile. For me, this stuff is all really important and very meaningful. I am afraid that the puppy community is headed in a direction that I will not be able to follow. That is a shame because I have met some really great guys. Guys I consider my friends. Even some who totally disagree with me. That’s fine. I still like them. Hell, if I only liked people I agree with I would be alone a lot. But I worry. I worry that guys who are drawn to something will not be able to find what they are seeking. They will leave in frustration. And here is what really worries me. If I stay silent, they will not know there are alternatives. I have played with pups who were surprised that a group of us were doing things a very different way than what they saw generally. So at the risk of whatever consequences I guess I thought I had to speak up. So let me tell you why. If you found a home with the non-sexual pups that's great. Good for you. But if you were looking for the hot animal fuckery that I associate with it and you go to some event where all they do is romp around....well then you might just think there is no place for you. You might not know you CAN be a part of that deep dark fantasy that makes your heart race and your dick hard. You might not believe that there are guys who share your wonderfully perverted world view.....BUT THERE ARE!!!
